2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Corrosive. May cause severe gastrointestinal tract irritation with nausea, vomiting and possible burns. May be harmful if swallowed. Ingestion of dry or liquid formulations containing 10% or higher concentrations of the product can result in serious injury to health.

Eye

Contact with eyes may cause severe irritation, and possible eye burns.

Skin

Contact with skin causes irritation and possible burns, especially if the skin is wet or moist.

Inhaled

May cause irritation of the respiratory tract with burning pain in the nose and throat, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and pulmonary oedema.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Chronic inhalation and ingestion may cause effects similar to those of acute inhalation and ingestion.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

DO NOT induce vomiting, give large quantities of water or milk. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical attention immediately.

Eye

Thoroughly rinse immediately with water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Eyelids should be held away from the eyeball to ensure thorough rinsing. Always seek medical attention.

Skin

Seek medical attention immediately. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.

Inhaled

Move to fresh air. Rinse mouth and nose with water. If breathing is irregular or stopped, administer artificial respiration. Obtain medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Medical conditions aggravated by exposure : asthma, skin & lung diseases. Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patint. Eye injury requires an immediate and thorough rinsing with water. Contact an eye specialist.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 600 - 1350 mg/kg (rat) Sensitisation - Not sensitising (30% w/w in a formulation). Genotoxicity - Not mutagenic (in vitro) Other toxicological information - The toxic effects of the product are caused by the alkalinity and not by substance specific systemic effects. The LD50 value is therefore of no practical significance due to the corrosive nature of the product. Not considered of being carcinogenic or teratogenic. Human experience : Ingestion of dry or liquid formulations containing 10% or higher concentrations of the product cna result in serious injury to health. Skin irritation - corrosive Eye irritation - corrosive

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

An exposure limit for this material has not been established by Worksafe , although a ceiling limit of 2mg/m3 respirable dust is recommended by the manufacturer.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Working areas and methods should be organised in such a way that direct contact is avoided. Avoid the creation of dust. Areas in which handling generates dust should have adequate ventilation equipment to minimise exposure to personnel.

3.3 Personal Protection

Respiratory protection - Do not breathe dust. In case of dust formation use suitable respiratory equipment (respirator with filter P2). Skin protection - Wear protective gloves and suitable clothing. Eye protection - Wear tightly fitting safety goggles.

3.4 Flammability

Product stable under normal storage and handling conditions.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

Store in a dry and cool place. Keep the original package or container closed if not in use. Store product delivered in bulk in closed containers made of stainless steel (e.g DIN 1.4571) or coated carbon steel. Avoid the creation of dust. Do not breathe dust. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid contact with incompatible materials such as certain metals (e.g aluminium, tin, zinc and their alloys). The product is hygroscopic and may form lumps.

Safety Phrases

S1/2 Keep locked up and out of the reach of children.

S13 Keep away from food, drink and animal foodstuffs.

S24/25 Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

S36/37/39 Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection.

S45 In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show the label whenever possible).

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including breahting apparatus in dusty conditions. Prevent material from entering waterways, drains or sewers.

Sinks and mixes with water. Sweep, scoop or vacuum up spilled material. Flush spill area with water and neutralise with dilute acid.

Disposal

Dispose of in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility. Product can be neutralised with dilute acid and solids landfilled according to relevant regulations. Contains which cannot be cleaned should be disposed of in the same manner as the substance.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Non-combustible. Stable under normal conditions. Flammable hydrogen gas may be produced on contact with metals such as aluminium, tin, lead and zinc, especially in the presence of moisture. Incompatible with strong acids. Exothermic reactions may occur with acids. Aqueous soltuion : attacks aluminium and zinc. Do not store in glass containers. When heated to decomposition toxic fumes of sodium oxide are emitted.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Material is non-combustible. Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions.

5 OTHER INFORMATION

Other Information

High pH. Alkalinity of undiluted or unneutralised material is harmful to aquatic life. Fish toxicity - LC50 (Brachydanio rerio, OECD 203) = 3185 mg/l (Mol.ratio 3.36 concentration 35%) Daphnia - EC50 (Daphnia magna, directive 92/69/EC) = 4857 mg/l (Mol.ration 3.2 concentration 35%) Bacteria - EC0 = > 1000 mg/l (Mol.ratio 3.36, concentration 35%, pH 7.9) Degradation abiotic - In aqueous solution of pH = < 9 the silicate is mineralised and precipitated. The maximum concentration of soluble silicates, at this pH, is 120 mg/l. Degradation biotic - Not applicable (Inorganic product). Other information - The pH rise id responsible for the environmental effect on the aquatic life. If not neutralised, this product can be toxic for aquatic organism because of its alkalinity. pH > 9 has a corrosive effect on fish (posisbly causing death). pH > 8.5 will result in destruction of algae.
